Trail and Health Initiatives

Safe and Active Flint Coalition
The Michigan Fitness Foundation (MFF) is engaged in multi-year initiative with the goals of both making the streets safer and encouraging Flint residents to choose active transportation through three initiatives. Safe Routes to School and Safe Routes for Work, each reaching different target populations, will be integrated with a national pilot of a “complete streets” training to accomplish these goals. How will this work?

  • Safe Routes to School (SR2S) – assesses the routes school children could use to walk/bike to school , collects other relevant information , and creates a plan to improve the safety of these routes.
  • Safe Routes for Work (SR4W) – assesses the routes employees could use to walk/bike to work and other work-related trips (nearby meetings , lunch errands) , collects other relevant information , and creates a plan to improve the safety of these routes
  • Complete Streets Training— enhances the capacity of technical experts and community groups/leaders to design streets which accommodate all users safely (automobile, walk, and bicycle). The training, conducted by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB), will tie together outcomes from both Safe Routes assessments by identifying infrastructure solutions that serve all user groups, improving the effectiveness of infrastructure-related changes.
The University of Michigan – Flint is the first worksite and Washington Elementary is the first school to be focused on with this initiative.
