During the course of this project a large amount of data was produced in a digital format for use with Geographic Information System (GIS) software. This data included updated 2003 land use/cover layers, digitized zoning maps and digitized future land use maps taken from municipal master plans.
The area for which data was produced was identified as the cities and townships experiencing the largest amount of population growth in Genesee County. The map on this page highlights the areas for which the data was generated. Though Grand Blanc Township and City have also experienced large population expansion, land use maps were not created for that area as updated 1998 land use data produced for those municipalities by Michigan State University. Time constraints limited the number of municipalities for which data was produced.
Data was first produced for Mundy Township, in part due to the proximity to Bishop Airport and the likelihood of population expansion surrounding the airport. Further mapping occurred around this location and then further south, again due to the population growth associated with the area.
Zoning maps were produced from the most recent zoning ordinances available in 2004 for each municipality. Future land use maps were produced from the most recent master plan documents available in 2004 for each municipality. The maps available for downloads on this site are for reference only and in no way replace the zoning ordinance maps or master plan documents available from each respective municipality. Furthermore, zoning and future land use classification explanations and specifications must be obtained from each municipality directly.
All maps in the downloads section are available in an Adobe PDF format for all viewers, as well as shapefile downloads for those with access to GIS software. All data was produced in ESRI geodatabase format to reduce topological errors and then exported to shapefiles for the downloads on this site. Complete metadata details are available for download below.
